About this wine

Character

Since 1986, Elisabetta Foradori has been producing Granato, a single-varietal Teroldego from Campo Rotaliano. It followed years of mass selection carried out together with the University of Milan and the San Michele research centre, through which she recovered the old clones of a grape variety whose reputation had been ruined by mass yields in the 20th century. The 2021 shows density and composure: dark fruit, firmly built, still closed in its youth.

Terroir and origin

Campo Rotaliano lies as an indentation of the Adige valley between two mountain ridges. Here, the Noce river has carried deposits of limestone, granite and porphyry scree for centuries. During the day the rock faces reflect the sun, while at night cool mountain air flows through the valley. Granato's roughly four hectares are spread across three sites near Mezzolombardo, on alluvial soil, gravel and pebbles.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Teroldego from old pergola-trained vines. Spontaneous fermentation in large, open vats, followed by 15 months of ageing in tonneau and a further 15 months of maturation in bottle. On average around 20,000 bottles a year, 13.0% vol., made in a dry style.

On the palate

Deep ruby red with a dark core. The nose is expansive: pomegranate, white mulberry, blackberry and elderberry, along with black cherry and dried plum, topped delicately with mallow, hibiscus and small violets. The palate opens velvety, the extract-rich fruit resting on noble tannins, with a clear streak of acidity carrying it through to the long finish. Young, it benefits from decanting; it shows its full potential after at least five years of bottle age.

Special features

The name refers to the pomegranate, which, like the grapevine, is widespread across the Mediterranean. The estate cultivates 28 hectares under Demeter certification, 80 percent of which is Teroldego; the Demeter logo appears on the label. Gambero Rosso has awarded its highest accolade to the estate 36 times. Since 2013, son Emilio has led the winemaking.
