About this wine
Character
A dark-fruited, powerful Teroldego that already shows generous, open-hearted character in its youth. Above the fruit lies the floral top note typical of this variety: mallow and violet, followed by blueberry and cherry, with a hint of chocolate at the end.
Terroir and origin
The Campo Rotaliano sits like an indentation of the Adige valley between the mountains. It was shaped by the Noce river, which has carried limestone, granite and porphyry debris down into the valley for centuries. The Vigneto Morei covers 2.5 hectares, planted 100% with Teroldego Rotaliano, on gravelly, sandy alluvial soils. By day the rock faces reflect the sun's heat, at night cool mountain air sweeps through the valley. The name comes from the Trentino dialect and means "dark", referring to the colour of the wine.
Grape variety and vinification
Teroldego was served at the Council of Trent and had almost disappeared during the 20th century due to mass-production yields. Elisabetta Foradori took over the estate in 1984 and brought back the old clones through years of mass selection, together with the University of Milan and the San Michele research centre. The grapes ferment in tinajas from Villarrobledo, and the wine clarifies over eight months of ageing on the skins. Clay instead of wood, because wood would overpower the Teroldego. Around 12,000 bottles a year; since 2013 son Emilio has been responsible for winemaking.
On the palate
Generous entry with expansive, glistening dark fruit and a friendly disposition. Firm, gripping tannins cinch it at the waist, tightly knit and dense, and the taut acidity leads into a cool, fruit-forward finish. At 12.5% vol., the wine remains agile despite its power.
Distinctive features
28 hectares of the estate are Demeter-certified, 80% of it Teroldego; the Demeter logo appears on the label. The estate also includes a biodynamic farm with Tyrolean grey cattle, a vegetable garden and its own cheese dairy.
