About this wine
Character
The Schlossberg Achkarren Spätburgunder GG 2021 is a dark, serious red wine from the Kaiserstuhl: dense and compact, yet silky-cool and finely etched. The fruit stays clearly defined, and the length is remarkable.
Terroir and origin
The VDP Grand Cru site Schlossberg in Achkarren is planted with Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. Its core lies sheltered from the wind and is extremely steep; the stored heat shapes the character of this historic site. Since 2009 a parcel of black volcanic soil has belonged to it, carrying a dry-stone wall up to four metres high along 150 metres.
Grape variety and vinification
Pinot Noir, vinified dry, 12.5% vol. Ageing lasts 18 months in barrique, with the new-oak share at exactly 35 percent. In the cellar built into the terraced slope in 2013, work follows the gravity-flow principle.
On the palate
On the nose, blackcurrant, raspberry and blackberry with a generous helping of sour cherry, along with juniper and black pepper, floral hibiscus, violet and pansy, and later a touch of hazelnut. On the palate, the dark fruit flows into a fine thread, with the spice showing white pepper and fennel seed. The fine tannin coats the mouth and lingers for minutes.
Food pairings
Sauerbraten with potato dumplings and red cabbage, oven-roasted white cabbage with brown butter and breadcrumbs, or grilled Wagyu flank steak with broad beans and herb oil.
Special features
When the ancient vines at the core of the site were due to be uprooted, Fritz Keller secured their genetic material; the site was only handed over to him once he had proven a grandmother from Achkarren. A sélection massale from this vine material produced the next generation. The grape variety does not appear on the front label.
