About this wine

Character

A Spätburgunder of quiet restraint: 12.5% ABV, vinified dry, driven by acidity and mineral spice rather than extract. The fruit stays clearly defined, the frame slender, the finish cool.

Terroir and origin

The Oberbergener Bassgeige vineyard belongs to the Kaiserstuhl, whose volcanic soils give the estate's wines their mineral edge. Friedrich Keller, at the helm as the fourth generation since 2016, calls the result "Baden Burgundy". Founded in 1892, the estate farms 35 hectares in Vogtsburg-Oberbergen.

Grape variety and vinification

Pinot Noir, known here as Spätburgunder. The winery, completed in 2013, is built into the hillside in terraces and operates on the gravity principle; its roof is planted with native species from the Badberg nature reserve. Uwe Barnickel and Christian Häuber vinify by the principle of "as little as possible, as much as necessary": strict parcel selection, minimal intervention, technology kept in the background.

On the palate

Ruby red with garnet reflections. On the nose, red cherry, wild raspberry and blackcurrant, joined by violet and herbal notes. The palate opens taut, the tannins are silky, and the finish is long and distinctly mineral.

Food pairing suggestions

With roast duck with orange jus, saddle of venison in red wine sauce, or game terrine with lingonberries. Its acidity and fine tannin also carry grilled salmon, a robust mushroom ragout, and aged hard cheese.

Highlights

The estate is home to the restaurant Schwarzer Adler, which has held a Michelin star continuously for over 55 years; Irma Keller was Germany's first female Michelin-starred chef. The estate produces around 400,000 bottles a year, moving step by step toward organic viticulture with biodynamic elements.
