About this wine
Character
A Spätburgunder of great density that carries its concentration effortlessly: juicy, dark-fruited, meaty and at the same time precisely woven. Nothing about it feels overdone.
Terroir and origin
The Achkarren Schlossberg is defined by black volcanic soil, tephrite. The parcels are secured by dry stone walls up to four metres high. The Schlossberg is one of the six VDP Grosse Lage vineyards of the Franz Keller estate, which has worked the Kaiserstuhl since 1892.
Grape variety and vinification
Spätburgunder from 20- to 30-year-old vines from a sélection massale. Spontaneously fermented to 1.6 grams of residual sugar, then aged 18 months in French barriques with 35% new oak. The winery, completed in 2013, is built in terraces into the slope and works on the gravity principle. Friedrich Keller has run the estate since 2016 as the fourth generation, gradually converting it to organic farming with biodynamic elements.
On the palate
Over the ripe, dark cherry fruit lies a haze of smoke and roses, nuts and elegant oak spice. Acidity and tannin structure are already so well integrated that the wine will be hard to resist drinking early, even though further ageing will add further dimensions. Finely and densely woven, deep and long in the finish.
Special features
12.5% vol., dry. A great German Spätburgunder in which power and lightness come together as if effortlessly.
