About this wine
Character
The Grüner Veltliner Ried Schlossberg 1.ÖTW 2020 by Fritsch is a dry white wine from an Erste Lage vineyard on the Wagram, bottled in magnum. It juxtaposes spice and drive alongside powerful, juicy fruit: dried apricots, mango, and orange meet an opulent floral scent and exotic spices such as cinnamon and cardamom. Beneath lies an earthy, stony depth that points to its excellent ageing potential.
Terroir and Origin
The vineyards surrounding the former Schloss Winkelberg face south and are situated on a plateau behind the Wagram ridge. Beneath the thick, fertile layer of loess lie glacial Danube terrace gravels, followed by clayey-silty Miocene marine sediments with sand pockets that bear witness to periodic storm events.
Grape Variety and Vinification
Single-varietal Grüner Veltliner with 12.5% ABV. The grapes were harvested by hand and spontaneously fermented for two months in used 2,000-litre wooden casks. Karl Fritsch has been cultivating the 25 hectares of Weinberghof in Oberstockstall biodynamically since 2006 and is one of the founding members of respekt-BIODYN.
On the Palate
Taut and demanding. The sweetish-leaning fruit is complemented by stimulating acidity and distinctly saline notes, underpinned by the spiciness found on the nose and a piquant tannin structure. A long-distance runner that gains even more with bottle age.
Food Pairings
Beetroot on rocket with candied walnuts and orange segments, pork tenderloin in cider with Calvados apples and mashed potatoes, as well as poultry roulades with corn filling and couscous, served with coriander mayonnaise.
Key Facts
Erste Lage (1.ÖTW) in the 1500 ml magnum format. Weinberghof Fritsch was admitted to the Traditionsweingüter Österreich association at the end of 2007. At this stage, decanting is essential.
