About this wine
Character
A Pinot Noir whose ripeness never tips into softness. On the nose, dark cherries and preserved plums, alongside leather, cedarwood, cinnamon and clove. A taut, firm minerality and spicy oak notes already give the bouquet structure and depth.
Terroir and origin
The Wagram lies 60 kilometres west of Vienna. Its escarpment at the edge of the Danube valley is a fossilised coastline of the Tertiary-era Tethys Sea: powerful loess deposits from the Ice Age, interspersed with lime-rich marine sediment that stores water and nutrients like a sponge. On this south-facing loess terrace, Weinberghof Fritsch farms 25 hectares in Oberstockstall.
Grape variety and vinification
Single-varietal Pinot Noir, vinified dry, 13.0% vol. In the mid-1960s, Karl Fritsch senior was one of the first in the Wagram to venture into red wine. Karl Fritsch junior took over the estate in 1999 and converted it to biodynamic farming in 2006: their own compost, biodynamic preparations, and a diversity of plants and animals in the vineyards acting as a buffer against pests.
On the palate
Taut, juicy and full-bodied, with ripe tannin and still-demanding acidity. The wine is currently still holding back and rewards patience. Be sure to decant now and drink from large Burgundy glasses.
Food pairing recommendations
A wine for meat dishes of all kinds in the autumn and winter season: beef brisket in mustard sauce with thyme and bacon potatoes, roast goose roulade with cranberries and walnuts, served with red cabbage and ricotta dumplings, or, for a vegetarian option, walnut gnocchi with radicchio and orange-cinnamon sauce.
Special features
"I'm simply not as good as nature." Karl Fritsch's words describe a way of working that accompanies rather than controls. The estate is a founding member of respekt-BIODYN and was admitted to the Traditionsweingüter Österreich in late 2007.
