About this wine
Character
The Gevrey-Chambertin "En Ergot" 1er Cru 2022 is a Pinot Noir from the Côte de Nuits that draws its effect from clarity rather than power. Jean-Louis Trapet, seventh generation of the domaine, works for terroir transparency: transparent fruit, fine-grained tannin, 13.0% Vol. and a wine that takes its time.
Terroir and origin
Gevrey-Chambertin lies in the Côte de Nuits in Burgundy; Domaine Trapet Père et Fils farms 18.5 hectares there. In his Gevrey-Chambertin vineyards, Jean-Louis Trapet found fossil oyster shells, witnesses to a former seabed. The limestone-marked soils lay a salty-chalky trace beneath the fruit. Since 1996 the domaine has worked biodynamically, with precise soil work and observation rather than intervention.
Grape variety and vinification
100% Pinot Noir. In the cellar the principle is to accompany, never to force: gentle cellar work, movement by gravity and a restrained share of new oak, so that the site speaks rather than the barrel. The wine is vinified dry.
On the palate
Silky flow and fine-grained tannin, at its core red cherry and wild berries, beneath that a salty-chalky minerality and delicate spice. The structure carries without heaviness, the finish stays lean and long.
Food pairings
Roasted pheasant breast, pink-roasted saddle of venison with lingonberries, Bœuf Bourguignon or Coq au Vin; to finish, aged Comté.
Special features
In the 1880s, Arthur Trapet secretly grafted vines onto American rootstock, at a time when this was still forbidden; the method was legalized in 1888. Jean-Louis Trapet has run the estate since the 1990s, with the credo "Les hommes passent et la terre reste" ("Men pass, the land remains"). The Guide des meilleurs vins de France awards three stars, the highest rating.
