About this wine
Character
A Gewürztraminer with a fine residual sweetness, drawing its spice from coolness. On the nose, sweet plums, pears, juicy pineapple and orange marmalade play against a chalky, cool undertone. Nothing pushes itself to the fore.
Terroir and origin
The Clos Windsbuhl lies at the level of the village of Hunawihr, a monopole of the domaine. The subsoil is shell limestone from the Triassic period, rich in shells and magnesium, often described as dolomitic limestone. The topsoil stays thin, and the vines quickly root into the poor parent rock. The slope and orientation warm the soil as much as this variety needs; the higher elevation and proximity to the forest cool it back down.
Grape variety and vinification
Gewürztraminer ripens slowly here and retains a naturally higher acidity. The 2019 fermented slowly and kept some sweetness, making it fair to call it a moelleux. Olivier Humbrecht, the first Frenchman to hold the title Master of Wine, farms 42 hectares biodynamically, since converting the first five hectares in 1996. Yields sit at 30 to 40 hectolitres per hectare, at least six months of lees contact lend texture, and no wine leaves the cellar before one to two years.
On the palate
Precise acidity, immense freshness, along with pear and pineapple. The fine sweetness recedes further with every sip, remaining as charm. The finish brings saline precision and a sweet-sour, aromatic interplay. A long-distance runner that will show more in a few years than it does today.
Food pairing suggestions
Caramelised chicory with grapefruit and pine nuts, beef fillet with caramelised black salsify or pineapple tart with Gewürztraminer foam and basil ice cream.
Special features
1500 ml magnum, 13.0% vol. If opening now, decant at least a day in advance and pour not too cold into large Burgundy glasses. With air, coriander, dried ginger and anise emerge.
