About this wine

Character

A lusciously sweet Gewürztraminer made from late-harvested grapes from a single vineyard in Alsace. The sweetness is broad, the acidity keeps it on track, and the 14.5% ABV register as substance rather than weight.

Terroir and origin

Clos Windsbuhl above Hunawihr is Domaine Zind-Humbrecht's monopole: a steep, southeast-facing amphitheatre on limestone marl. The soils store warmth and give the Gewürztraminer structure alongside its fruit.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Gewürztraminer. For the Vendanges Tardives, the grapes hang well past the regular harvest until they are concentrated and partly touched by noble rot. Yields on the estate run at 30 to 40 hectolitres per hectare, the wine spends at least six months on the lees, and no wine leaves the cellar before one to two years of ageing.

On the palate

First lychee and rose petal, then mango and passion fruit, alongside clove, ginger and honey. The texture is dense, almost oily, and the finish brings candied citrus peel and dried apricot.

Food pairings

Roquefort or Stilton set salt against the sweetness. Duck liver terrine with figs plays into the fruity side, and with spicy Asian dishes featuring ginger and chilli, the residual sweetness cushions the heat.

Special features

Olivier Humbrecht was the first Frenchman to hold the title of Master of Wine, his family has been growing wine since 1620, and since 2019 Pierre Émile Humbrecht has joined him as the eleventh generation. In 1996 he converted the first five hectares to biodynamic farming; horses now work the steepest parcels again.
