About this wine
Character
This Gewürztraminer comes from the heart of the Grand Cru Hengst and carries power without becoming broad. The nose is compact and mineral, distinctly spiced, with ethereal, fresh notes of fresh ginger, orange peel, lavender oil and lilac.
Terroir and origin
The Grand Cru Hengst is located near Wintzenheim in Alsace; the grapes come from two very old vineyards at the centre of the site. The red marl-limestone soil carries a high iron content, and the microclimate is warm and dry. Together they give the wine structure and a tannic density unusual for a white wine.
Grape variety and vinification
Gewürztraminer naturally has low acidity and therefore needs very ripe skins and a good tannic structure. On the Hengst, the variety overcomes its rich varietal intensity and gains in complexity. Olivier Humbrecht farms biodynamically, keeps yields to 30 to 40 hectolitres per hectare, and leaves the wines on the lees for at least six months; before release they age for one to two years in the cellar.
On the palate
Powerful and dense, a blend of sweet honey and spice, alongside apricot, grapefruit and banana. The acidity is precise and fresh, the minerality profound, and the wine remains effortless to drink despite its richness.
Food pairing recommendations
Chickpea tart with spiced figs, truffle risotto with crispy guinea fowl breast and poultry jus, and Munster cheese with caraway baked in brick pastry, glazed with forest honey.
Special features
Open a day ahead, and notes of cardamom, cumin, gingerbread spice, leather, wood smoke, light tobacco and forest honey emerge. 13.5% ABV. Olivier Humbrecht calls the 2018 the absolute proof of this terroir's greatness; the wine is built for the cellar, and setting a few bottles aside is well worth it.
