About this wine
Character
A Gewürztraminer that forgoes fruit power. Here the variety is kept in check: floral, precisely drawn, never loud. A wine for now and for the next decade.
Terroir and origin
The Grand Cru Rangen de Thann rises above the town of Thann in southern Alsace at a 68-degree gradient, the steepest vineyard slope in Alsace. On 5.5 hectares of volcanic rock, wines of mineral intensity emerge, combining spice and elegance.
Grape variety and vinification
A pure Gewürztraminer from biodynamic farming. Olivier Humbrecht, the first Frenchman to hold the title of Master of Wine, converted the first five hectares in 1996, and horses once again work the steepest parcels today. Yields lie between 30 and 40 hectolitres per hectare, the wines rest at least six months on the lees and leave the cellar only after one to two years of maturation. Alcohol stands at 13.5% vol., with a pronounced residual sweetness.
On the palate
A composed entry, a slender flow, elegant stature. Orange blossom, lychee and rosewater return on the palate, emphatic yet quiet. The texture is creamy, the finish long and persistent.
Food pairings
With warm Munster cheese with pear chutney and green cardamom, with carp with water chestnuts and peach in a light soy nage, or with red duck curry with yellow cherry tomatoes, Thai basil and lychee.
Distinctive features
The Humbrecht family has been growing vines since 1620, and since 2019 Pierre Émile Humbrecht has joined as the eleventh generation. The estate comprises 42 hectares, 11.5 of which lie across six Grand Cru sites.
