About this wine
Character
A Pinot Noir that thrives on contrasts: bright and dark at once, seemingly light yet profound. The fruit still lies beneath a dark, floral veil, behind which austere, nutty traits and an earthy note of forest floor, red earth and chalk emerge.
Terroir and origin
The Biengarten stretches across steep terraces and slopes from Gimmeldingen to Königsbach along the edge of the forest; a gentle hollow shelters it from cold winds. The soil is tertiary limestone marl, the same limestone reef on which the VDP.Grosse Lage sites Idig and Ölberg also stand. The Christmann family farms 1.1 hectares here, facing east to east-southeast with a 10% gradient. The vines, planted in 1982, bear only a few, very loose-berried clusters.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Pinot Noir, harvested on 21 September 2021. Spontaneous fermentation with 10% whole clusters, aged until February 2022 in barrique with 10% new oak, bottled in May 2023 – here in Magnum format.
On the palate
Silky and delicate on entry, then a powerful surge of acidity takes hold and drives the wine forward. Astringency is pronounced, drinkability great. The fruit turns darker and merges with the floral aromas. The finish recalls freshly broken branches, juicy green and woody, with slightly smoky accents and a touch of herbal freshness.
Food pairings
Celeriac steaks with parsley pesto and puffed spelt, warm salad of aubergines, tomatoes and pine nuts or tagliatelle with radicchio and lemon.
Special features
The A. Christmann estate has farmed biodynamically since 2003, certified respekt-BIODYN and EU organic. Steffen Christmann, president of the VDP since 2007, runs the estate together with his daughter Sophie Christmann. Across 17 hectares, only single-vineyard wines from Riesling and Pinot are produced.
