About this wine
Character
The Gimmeldinger Biengarten Spätburgunder from Christmann is a dry Pinot Noir from a single vineyard with VDP Erste Lage status. At 13.0% vol. it stays lean: its structure comes from acidity and tannin, not from alcohol.
Terroir and origin
Gimmeldingen in the Palatinate has been home to the A. Christmann estate since 1798. Across 17 hectares, only single-vineyard wines are grown, with every plot classified as VDP.ERSTE or VDP.GROSSE LAGE. Red sandstone, limestone and terraced gravel shape each wine differently.
Grape variety and vinification
Spätburgunder and a little Weissburgunder share the vineyard area alongside Riesling, which accounts for 70 percent of the estate. Steffen and Sophie Christmann have farmed biodynamically since 2003: horn manure, horn silica and compost preparations replace synthetic chemistry, with all work following the lunar calendar. The magnum format gives the 2022 vintage more time.
On the palate
Ruby red with cherry-red hues, medium intensity. On the nose, ripe cherry and strawberry, violet, along with herbal spice and a subtle toasty note. On the palate, juicy red fruit over silky tannin, the acidity holds the line, and the finish stays mineral and dry.
Food pairings
With roast duck breast, veal medallions with porcini and aged Comté. Venison saddle or mushroom risotto with truffle also pair well with this Spätburgunder.
Special features
Organic since 2002, biodynamic since 2003, certified respekt-BIODYN and EU organic. Steffen Christmann runs the estate in its seventh generation and has been president of the VDP since 2007; daughter Sophie joined in 2018 after studying at Geisenheim and working stints in Bordeaux and Australia. The estate is a member of La Renaissance des Appellations.
