About this wine

Character

A Grosses Gewächs of great finesse: purist yet never austere, refined and elegant while still gripping. Bright acidity, salt and dancing fruit keep this Riesling under tension.

Terroir and origin

The Meerspinne is an old parcel carved out of the Gimmeldinger Mandelgarten in the Pfalz and declared a Grosses Gewächs, while the remainder of the Mandelgarten is classified as Erste Lage. The topsoil consists of limestone and variegated sandstone marl over a solid limestone subsoil. The site is farmed by the A. Christmann estate in Gimmeldingen, run jointly by Steffen and Sophie Christmann.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Riesling from vines whose yield is generally limited to just 40 hl/ha, allowing the grapes to reach optimal flavour concentration. The whole clusters were mashed, pressed slowly after an extended maceration, and fermented spontaneously at warm temperatures. The wine then aged on the lees in a large wooden cask until bottling. Vinified dry, 12.0% vol.

On the palate

On the nose, wet stone and petrichor, crushed oyster shells, a touch of smoke and herbs, plus salted lemon and limequat zest, pear, apple and almond pastry. On the palate, bright acidity, salt and dancing fruit, along with piquant, mouth-watering notes reminiscent of ginger. Electrifying and full of energy.

Distinctive features

The estate has farmed biodynamically since 2003, certified to respekt-BIODYN and EU organic standards. Across 17 hectares, only single-vineyard wines from Riesling and Pinot are grown; the Meerspinne ranks among the estate's VDP.GROSSE LAGE sites. Steffen Christmann has served as president of the VDP since 2007.
