About this wine
Character
A dry Pinot Noir that favours tension over mass. What Steffen Christmann describes as his estate's ideal, powerful yet elegant, with perfect balance, can be verified here in red: upfront dark cherry and wild raspberry, followed by violet and undergrowth, with a cool, long finish.
Terroir and origin
The Gimmeldinger Schlössel lies near Gimmeldingen in the Palatinate and is classified as VDP.ERSTE LAGE. Variegated sandstone, limestone and terraced gravel form the subsoil of the Christmann sites and shape each wine differently; for the Pinot, they lend fine-grained structure rather than breadth. All 17 hectares of the estate are classified as VDP.ERSTE or VDP.GROSSE LAGE, with single-vineyard wines as the sole programme.
Grape variety and vinification
Pinot Noir, called Spätburgunder in the Palatinate. 70 percent of the vineyard area is planted with Riesling, the rest with Spätburgunder and a little Weissburgunder. The estate has been farmed organically since 2002, biodynamically since 2003, and is now certified respekt-BIODYN and EU organic. Horn manure, horn silica and compost preparations replace synthetic chemistry, and vineyard work follows the lunar calendar.
On the palate
Juicy red and black berry fruit, silky tannins and a vibrant acidity that keeps the wine upright. 13.0 % Vol., aged dry, without heaviness. The Magnum format gives the bottle time.
Special features
The A. Christmann estate has existed since 1798; Steffen Christmann took over in 1996 as the seventh generation and has been president of the VDP since 2007. Daughter Sophie, a graduate of Hochschule Geisenheim with experience in Bordeaux and Australia, joined in 2018, while grandfather Fritz, now over 90, still works in the vineyard. The estate is a member of respekt-BIODYN and La Renaissance des Appellations.
