About this wine
Character
A white wine vinified as an orange wine: up to two weeks on the skins impart color, tannin, and texture without overshadowing the fruit. While it remains understated on the nose, it becomes considerably more expressive on the palate.
Terroir and Origin
The Pinot Gris thrives on crystalline slate and quartzite slate soils on the Joiser Hackelsberg and the Windener Spiegel. Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay hail from the limestone- and slate-rich eastern slopes of the Leithaberg, largely from the premier sites Breitenbrunner Edelgraben and Windener Alter Berg.
Grape Variety and Vinification
A blend of Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, and Chardonnay. Harvested by hand between late August and mid-September, spontaneously fermented, with a portion of the grapes remaining on the skins for up to two weeks. The wine then matures for 17 months in amphorae and large, used oak casks crafted by local cooper Klaus Pauscha.
On the Palate
The nose opens up only after vigorous swirling, subsequently revealing red fruit, lingonberry, white mulberry, and rosehip. On the palate, this initial restraint gives way to emphasis: red apple skins, orange oil, tart culinary herbs, and rosehip, with the succulent fruit sculpted by the phenolic grip of skin maceration. The ripe, expansive acidity provides verticality and length.
Food Pairings
Ricotta ravioli in a clear bell pepper broth with fennel fronds, red mullet on saffron fennel, and confit rabbit with Piment d'Espelette.
Special Features
Gernot and Heike Heinrich cultivate their one hundred hectares in Gols on Lake Neusiedl biodynamically, are Demeter-certified (since 2017), and co-founded respekt-BIODYN. In the cellar, they work using gravity rather than pumps, with clay amphorae increasingly replacing small wooden barrels. 12.0% ABV, dry.
