About this wine

Character

The Pannobile 2016 is a dry red wine blend of Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch, produced by Gernot and Heike Heinrich in Gols on Lake Neusiedl. Balanced and precise, velvety at its core, kept in motion by a vein of acidity and a whisper-light bitterness.

Terroir and origin

The Heinrichs have grown their estate from two to a hundred hectares, parcel by parcel, often taking on the steep, stony sites that others had given up on. The vineyards lie between the cool limestone of the Leitha Range and the gravel and red shale soils of the Parndorf Plateau.

Grape variety and vinification

55 percent Zweigelt, 45 percent Blaufränkisch. Three weeks of skin contact in an open wooden fermenter, followed by 21 months in used 500-litre barrels crafted by regional cooper Klaus Pauscha, from wood that allows air through without contributing its own aromas. Bottled in August 2018, 12.5% ABV. Gravity does the work in the cellar; no pumps are used.

On the palate

The nose stays initially reserved, opening with air and a large glass to precisely drawn fruit: dark cherry, Black Forest cherry cake, overlaid with a floral trace and tobacco from the wine's maturity. On the palate the fruit sits crisp and fresh in layers, framed by fine-grained tannin, with a long-carrying finish. The wine drinks beautifully today; for the patient, it was due to open up from 2022.

Food pairings

Braised pork belly with potato flan and fruity red cabbage salad, stuffed roast chicken with chestnuts, sweet potatoes and grilled kohlrabi, or, for a vegetarian option, a Mediterranean grilled vegetable quiche with gorgonzola and walnuts.

Special features

Biodynamic since 2006, Demeter-certified since 2017, and a founding member of respekt-BIODYN, which the Heinrichs established in 2009 together with other winegrowers. While clay amphorae are increasingly replacing the small oak barrels in the cellar, wood remains indispensable for the Pannobile.
