About this wine

Character

This single-varietal Grenache combines southern warmth with lightness: plenty of ripe red fruit, along with fine tannins and an acidity that keeps the wine lively despite its 14.5% vol.

Terroir and origin

Les Usclades is a parcel at 350 metres in the Dentelles de Montmirail, with soil dating back to the Middle Triassic. The vineyard is entirely surrounded by forest and hedgerows. Philippe Gimel's vineyards on Mont Ventoux lie between 300 and 500 metres, crisscrossed by hedgerows and surrounded by fruit trees and aromatic herbs. The cool nights at this altitude give the wines their freshness.

Grape variety and vinification

Grenache, hand-harvested on 7 September 2020, three-quarters destemmed and fermented in concrete vats. This is followed by eleven months of ageing in stainless steel and nine months in bottle. Oak is never used in the cellar.

On the palate

On the nose, ripe wild strawberries and raspberries, along with ripe plums, warm yeasty notes, a touch of liquorice, grape stems and stone. On the palate, warm, deep red fruit and a round, almost velvety tannin; the wine glides lightly, fills the mouth with warmth and fruit, and remains carried by fine tannins and acidity.

Food pairings

Long-braised Siu Yuk pork belly with fennel vegetables, Moroccan lamb and apricot tajine, or aubergines stuffed with anchovies and assorted cheeses.

Special features

Philippe Gimel gave up his pharmacy studies to become an oenologist and, together with geologist Claude Bourguignon, searched for the right vineyard. In 2003 he found twelve hectares of old vines, with no cellar and no infrastructure. His parcels have up to six different rock layers, the vines average over forty years of age, and yields are around 20 hectolitres per hectare.
