About this wine
Character
A cool, lean Grüner Veltliner with a flinty, smoky opening and a delicate hint of pepper. With oxygen, lemon zest, kumquats, green apple and green gooseberry unfold, finely and densely interwoven.
Terroir and origin
The Riede Steiner Schreck lies near Stein an der Donau in the Kremstal. Markus and Heideline Lang farm 2.5 hectares here and in the Riede Braunsdorfer according to Demeter guidelines, with vines 80 to 100 years old and 2.4-metre-high canopy walls. The cellar sits deep within the mountain's gneiss: a bombproof tunnel from the Second World War with a constant temperature of 9 °C.
Grape variety and vinification
Grüner Veltliner, harvested according to pH rather than sugar content, at pH 3.0. Markus Lang, an aircraft engineer for 25 years, presses outdoors on a self-built basket press with 100 tonnes of pressure, here for two days. Spontaneously fermented in a large wooden foudre, two years on the lees, bottled unfiltered.
On the palate
The acidity runs through taut and precise, embedded in fruit and body. It gets the saliva flowing, everything feels invigorating and finely structured, including the exceptionally moderate 10% ABV. A delicately lean wine, made in a dry style.
Food pairing recommendations
Viennese veal schnitzel, trout with almond butter, green asparagus, asparagus salad with radishes or sushi. Also a clever choice alongside young goat's cheese.
Special features
Demeter-certified, the logo appears on the label. Around 12,000 bottles a year across the whole estate. The basket press achieves an 80% juice yield instead of the usual 68 to 72%. The name refers to the water of the nearby Danube and to the character of these unfiltered wines.
