About this wine
Character
The Guix Vermell 2018 is the flagship wine from Terroir Sense Fronteres and stays true to its dark palette: blackberry and cassis, alongside tar, leather and liquorice. Olive, rosemary and juniper add Mediterranean, aromatic accents, joined by white pepper. Deep, cool and weightless in the glass.
Terroir and origin
The grapes grow in Les Montalts, four hectares of Garnacha bush vines at 800 metres of altitude. The vines are 45 years old, the soils sandy-clay; the name Guix Vermell, red gypsum, refers to their colour. The climate is Mediterranean, and the altitude brings cool nights and slow ripening. Yields sit between 15 and 20 hectolitres per hectare.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Garnacha Fina, picked early for a moderate 13.5% ABV. Whole clusters, stems included, are foot-trodden; there is no destemmer in the cellar. Fermentation takes place with a long maceration in 400-litre terracotta amphorae and in concrete tanks, with no oak whatsoever. Sulphur additions remain minimal, and the wine is neither fined nor filtered. The 2018 vintage yielded 1,600 bottles.
On the palate
It grips firmly, with drive and a fine-grained tannin that fills the mouth from the first sip, coating it in an almost silky texture. The Mediterranean spice comes through clearly, both meaty and juicy at once. Subtle toasty notes linger on the finish.
Food pairing suggestions
Rack of lamb with chimichurri and baked sweet potatoes, roast beef with a Mediterranean vegetable medley and rosemary potatoes, or, for a vegetarian option, salt-crust beetroot with basil pesto and grilled feta.
Special features
Terroir Sense Fronteres, Catalan for "terroir without borders," was founded in 2017 by Tatjana Peceric and Dominik Huber. Peceric, a Slovenian winemaker, shapes the estate's style and direction: early harvest, long maceration, patience over intervention.
