About this wine

Character

The Guix Vermell 2021 is a single-varietal Garnacha from Montsant, pale in the glass and remarkably light-footed at 13.0% ABV. Dry, juicy, and carried by supple tannin, this is a red wine that draws its depth from freshness and herbal spice rather than from extraction.

Terroir and origin

The grapes come from the Les Montalts vineyard, four hectares at 800 metres altitude, planted with 45-year-old Garnacha bush vines. The wine's name means "red gypsum" in Catalan, a nod to the colour of the soil. The sandy-clay soils are loose, the climate Mediterranean, yet the altitude brings cool nights and slow ripening.

Grape variety and vinification

Harvest comes early to keep alcohol moderate; yields run at 15 to 20 hectolitres per hectare. The cellar uses neither a de-stemmer nor barriques: whole clusters with stems are foot-trodden and fermented in 400-litre terracotta amphorae and concrete tanks, with an extended maceration. Sulphur additions remain minimal, and the wine is neither fined nor filtered.

On the palate

Cool cherry and raspberry, alongside wild Mediterranean herbs and an earthy, mineral note. The tannin is softly drawn, and the acidity keeps the wine in motion, giving it great drinkability.

Food pairing suggestions

With rack of lamb with rosemary, with paella or tapas with chorizo and pimientos. Grilled vegetables, mushroom dishes, and semi-cured Manchego also pair well. Serve lightly chilled, at 14 to 16 degrees.
