About this wine
Character
An orange wine from Vienna that smooths nothing over. Pale, bright orange, clear with a slight haze. The nose unfolds widely: bergamot forms the heart note, circled by citrus fruits, with kumquat setting the aromatic direction. In the mid-range sit orange blossom and jasmine, underscored by a rich bass of pine resin and spruce shoots.
Terroir and origin
The vines stand on the Nussberg in Grinzing, on 20 hectares of weathered limestone soils in the Nussberg, Weissleiten and Steinberg sites. The Nussberg is among the capital's most historic vineyards, and some of the vines are among the oldest in Austria.
Grape variety and vinification
A cuvée of 50% Red Traminer and 50% Yellow Traminer, fermented on the skins, bottled unfiltered and unfined. The principle is one of radical non-intervention: whatever the vintage brings stays in the wine. 12.0% Vol., made dry.
On the palate
The aromas from the nose return: bitter orange provides tart citrus freshness, the prominent bitter notes catching the sweetness of the extract. The acidity stays mild, the tannin sits firmly knit, with gentle roundness beneath it. Full and juicy, with a dryish finish.
Special features
Hajszan Neumann is the natural-wine testing ground of Fritz Wieninger, who took over the estate in 2014 from Stefan Hajszan and Heinz Neumann. Stefan Hajszan had already converted it to biodynamics back in 2006, as the first Viennese winegrower to do so, and Wieninger continues this path as co-president of respekt-BIODYN. The estate is respekt-BIODYN certified.
