About this wine
Character
A dry Spätburgunder from the IDIG, the heart of the A. Christmann estate in Gimmeldingen. 13.0% Vol. carries a wine built on finesse rather than power: bright fruit, silky texture, and that saline note which Steffen Christmann traces back to the soil and which gives the wines from the IDIG their elegance.
Terroir and origin
The IDIG vineyard lies in Königsbach in the Mittelhaardt and once belonged to prince-electors whose wines were served at court. In the 1990s the Christmann family acquired the then-neglected parcels and restored them. Today it owns 95 percent of the classified area, effectively a monopoly. Limestone defines the subsoil and, with it, the wine's mineral tension.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure varietal Pinot Noir, spontaneously fermented with its own yeasts and aged in oak barrels, without cosmetic intervention. The vines have been farmed biodynamically since 2003: horn manure, horn silica and compost preparations instead of synthetic chemistry, with work carried out according to the lunar calendar. In Magnum the wine matures more slowly and evenly than in a standard bottle.
On the palate
Juicy red fruit, sour cherry and raspberry, alongside violet, undergrowth and subtle spice. The tannin is fine-grained, the acidity vivid, the finish long and pure.
Food pairings
Roast duck with cherry sauce, pink-roasted veal fillet, saddle of venison, mushroom dishes, as well as aged Comté or Gruyère.
Special features
The estate farms 17 hectares, exclusively classified sites planted with Riesling and Pinot. Steffen Christmann took over in 1996 as the seventh generation and has been president of the VDP since 2007; his daughter Sophie Christmann joined in 2018. Certified to respekt-BIODYN and EU organic standards.
