About this wine

Character

A red wine that draws its effect from freshness, not mass. 12.5 percent alcohol, pale cherry-red colour, aromas of red cherry, raspberry and violet, alongside Mediterranean herbal spice. Dry, clearly delineated, built with transparency.

Terroir and origin

Since 2004, Arianna Occhipinti has farmed 42 hectares across nine contrade around Vittoria in southeastern Sicily. The vines for Il Frappato stand in the Contrada Bombolieri, whose soils have the estate's highest limestone content, alongside sand and clay. Not a drop of irrigation water has ever reached these vineyards. The vines are trained as alberello, the traditional bush training adapted to Mediterranean drought.

Grape variety and winemaking

Frappato has been documented in Vittoria since 1812, an indigenous variety long underestimated. The estate has farmed biodynamically since 2009. The wine ferments spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, ages in cement tanks and is bottled unfiltered and unfined.

On the palate

Lean and juicy, with fine-grained tannins and precise acidity. Strawberry and citrus peel carry the drive through to a cool, mineral finish.

Food pairings

Grilled tuna or sardines, pasta with Sicilian swordfish, along with pizza, caponata and young pecorino. Serve lightly chilled at 14 to 16 degrees.

Distinctive features

At 21, Arianna Occhipinti bought her first hectare of abandoned vines; today Frappato sits at the heart of her work. The 1500-millilitre magnum is the format for long tables.
