About this wine

Character

A dark, profound red wine from Méntrida that manages to be both ripely sweet and cool at once. The fruit is dense, underpinned by a minerality that carries through the wine from start to finish. Vinified dry, 14.0% vol.

Terroir and origin

The vines are around 100 years old and grow at 1,100 metres of altitude on granite and sand. Méntrida lies north of Madrid; poor soils and cool nights explain the freshness this wine retains despite its richness. Farming is biodynamic.

Grape variety and vinification

The name comes from Bobal and Albillo Real, the latter a white variety. After hand harvesting, the grapes ferment with wild yeasts in French oak barrels. Bottling takes place without filtration or stabilisation.

On the palate

On the nose, black cherries, sweet blackberries, preserved figs and liquid dark chocolate, joined with air by sweet mocha and liquorice. On the palate, dense dark fruit with a fine sweetness that wraps around the pronounced tannins, with invigorating freshness behind. The finish is long and carries plenty of umami.

Food pairings

Dishes with sweet, spicy and chocolatey accents: duck liver tartlet with blackberry jelly and bitter chocolate, black-feathered chicken with truffle, blueberries and celeriac purée or Bleu d'Auvergne with preserved blackcurrants and crusty baguette.

Highlights

Production totals 1,200 bottles. Since the stylistic shift of 2007, José Jiménez-Landi has worked with spontaneous fermentation and minimal intervention rather than extraction and new barriques.
