About this wine
Character
A Garnacha that holds richness and coolness together. The nose feels almost lavish, while the palate stays taut and saline. Young, the wine needs air: decant for several hours and serve in large glasses.
Terroir and origin
The grapes come from El Real de San Vicente in Méntrida, where José Jiménez-Landi farms five hectares under strict biodynamic practices, following the lunar calendar and applying horn manure and horn silica. The vines are 70 years old and root between 750 and 900 metres in sandy, granite-based soil. The granite of the Sierra de Gredos gives the wine its stony vein.
Grape variety and vinification
Grenache, hand-harvested. Fermentation takes place in wooden vats with wild yeasts, ageing in French barriques and large casks. The wine is bottled without filtration or stabilisation. Since the estate's stylistic shift in 2007, it has forgone extraction and new barriques; pumping and pump-over are taboo.
On the palate
The nose offers sweet blackberries, glazed black cherries and black plum compote, along with oriental spices and fruit bread over a peaty, mineral depth; with extended aeration, truffle and liquorice emerge. On the palate, the freshness, precise acidity, saline minerality and fine tannic structure stand out, at once demanding and enveloping. A long-distance runner.
Food pairings
Saddle of veal with apricot butter and liquorice gnocchi, BBQ chicken drumsticks with tomato-avocado salad and, for a vegetarian option, chocolate noodles with orange segments.
Highlights
Pielago is the estate's village wine. Total production amounts to 2,128 bottles, with an alcohol content of 14.5% vol.
