About this wine
Character
A sparkling wine that brings coolness and creaminess together: sharp on entry, finely structured in the middle, carried by an ultra-fine, broadly spread perlage. The dosage of 1.5 grams gives precedence to the acidity without the wine ever feeling thin. It suits an apéritif just as well as delicate dishes.
Terroir and origin
Karthäuserhof is located in Trier-Eitelsbach in the cool Ruwer valley, ever since Prince-Elector Balduin of Luxembourg gifted the land to the Carthusian monks in 1335. Albert Behler has run the estate since 2012, the seventh generation, farming it biodynamically. The estate includes the Karthäuserhofberg, a monopoly site of nearly 20 hectares on iron-rich Devonian slate with a south-southwest exposure and parcels with gradients of up to 55 percent, classified in the highest category by the royal Prussian government in 1868. The valley's cool nights shape the finesse of the wines.
Grape variety and vinification
80 percent Riesling and 20 percent Pinot Blanc. The second fermentation takes place in the bottle, followed by 36 months of lees ageing. Dosage 1.5 grams, 12.0 percent alcohol, made in a dry style.
On the palate
Pale yellow with silvery highlights. The opening brings citrus, green apple, chalky notes and a pronounced herbal spice. With air, brioche, oyster shell, sea breeze, green tea and grapefruit join in, all interwoven. The wine stays cool and mouth-watering across the palate.
Distinctive features
Mathieu Kauffmann, formerly chef de cave at Bollinger, joined the Ruwer in 2020 and in 2024 realised the first Karthäuserhof Brut: French sparkling wine craftsmanship applied to an estate that has been producing wine for almost 700 years.
