About this wine
Character
A Riesling that comes across as both serious and playful. The slate announces itself immediately: the wine smells stony and slightly smoky, layered with floral scent and delicate fruit of vineyard peach, lemon and pear. In the glass, it shows straw yellow with green reflections.
Terroir and origin
The Enkircher Steffensberg lies on the Middle Mosel, where Konstantin Weiser and Alexandra Künstler farm four hectares. The vines grow on blue and grey Devonian slate, with the steep slopes reaching gradients of up to 70 percent, and every step of the work done by hand. Over 80 percent of the estate's vineyard area is ungrafted, with many vines over 100 years old.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Riesling from ancient vineyard parcels. Spontaneous fermentation and maturation in the traditional Mosel oak cask (Moselfuder) are the rule here, along with extended lees ageing. The wine is made in a dry style and reaches 12.0% vol.
On the palate
The acidity feels taut, with dark stoniness and minerality dominating the foreground, while the fruit stays bright, crisp and fresh. A wine with depth, tension and a pleasant sense of pressure, marked by zesty tartness and a long, savoury finish. The balance is already remarkable, yet this Riesling has only just awakened and needs time.
Special features
Konstantin Weiser and Alexandra Künstler started out in 2005 with no family winemaking tradition and just 1.8 hectares, and to this day work entirely on their own: from vineyard oversight through harvest to labelling. They are members of the "Klitzekleiner Ring", an association dedicated to preserving old Riesling vines. An owl watches over their antique-blue Schlegel-shaped bottles.
