About this wine
Character
A light, dry Riesling with real drive. The playful acidity carries a saline trace, joined by fine spice and plenty of grip. At 11.0% vol. it stays slender and is already a pleasure to drink young, while further bottle age reveals its facets and complexity more clearly. In the glass, pale golden yellow with green highlights.
Terroir and origin
Around the turn of the previous century, the Trabener Gaispfad was among the most expensive vineyard sites on the entire Mosel. The grapes come from the lower and upper sections of this site. The vines are rooted in blue and grey Devonian slate, on slopes as steep as 70%, where every step of the work remains done by hand.
Grape variety and vinification
Riesling, bottled as a dry Kabinett. Over 80 percent of the four hectares on the Middle Mosel stand on ungrafted vines, many of them over 100 years old. The wine ferments spontaneously, without fining or clarifying agents, and ages in large oak casks on full lees, unracked until bottling in April.
On the palate
The nose offers lime, green apple and a subtle hint of wild raspberry, along with freshly brewed verbena and a touch of white pepper over slaty, earthy undertones. On the tongue it feels tremendously invigorating, the acidity immediately sets the saliva flowing, and the interplay of sweetness and acidity stays well balanced.
Food recommendations
Dishes with vegetables and herbs are the trump card here.
Special features
Konstantin Weiser and Alexandra Künstler have run the estate since 2005 without any family tradition behind them, managing their four hectares entirely by themselves, from the morning check in the vineyard to labelling the bottles. They are members of the Klitzekleiner Ring, an association dedicated to preserving old Riesling vines. The wise owl adorns the antique-blue Schlegel-shaped bottles.
