About this wine

Character

A slender Riesling Kabinett at 8.0% ABV, balancing its sweetness against pronounced acidity. In the glass, pale yellow with distinct green highlights. Mineral expression, plenty of drive, little weight: a wine you want to drink by the glassful.

Terroir and origin

The Enkircher Ellergrub is a terraced, steep vineyard, planted entirely with ancient, ungrafted vines. The soil consists of blue and grey Devonian slate, the slope reaches up to 70 percent, and every step of the work is done entirely by hand. Konstantin Weiser and Alexandra Künstler have independently farmed four hectares around Enkirch and Traben-Trarbach since 2005; over 80 percent of their vines are ungrafted, many of them over 100 years old.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Riesling from organic farming, largely hand-worked in the vineyard and traditional, gentle cellar work. The wine ferments spontaneously in a 1000-litre oval cask, without fining or clarifying agents. Fermentation is halted, and further maturation also takes place in the cask.

On the palate

The glass offers green apple, lime, sugared grapefruit and elderflower, along with hints of white pepper and cool slate. The palate opens with precise acidity that gets the saliva flowing. Pale yellow fruits and citrus carry the wine, the sweetness rounds it off, and the low alcohol keeps it light.

Distinctive features

Ungrafted here means: never grafted onto American rootstock. Weiser-Künstler are members of the "Klitzekleiner Ring," an association for the preservation of old Riesling vines, and do everything themselves, from vineyard inspection to labelling.
