About this wine
Character
A nobly sweet Auslese whose concentration never translates into weight. At 7.0% ABV it remains light, its sweetness set against a cool, pointed acidity, and the aromatics are drawn with striking precision.
Terroir and origin
Trabener Gaispfad is one of the steep vineyard sites around Traben-Trarbach on the Middle Mosel and, around the turn of the penultimate century, was one of the most expensive vineyard sites on the Mosel. Here, blue slate is mixed with some reddish slate, which gives the wines an extra touch of extravagance. The slopes reach gradients of up to 70%, and every step of the work is done by hand.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Riesling. Konstantin Weiser and Alexandra Künstler have farmed their four hectares entirely on their own since 2005, from the morning check in the vineyard through the harvest to the labelling. The wine ferments spontaneously in a 325-litre stainless steel tank, without fining or clarifying agents; racking is also done into stainless steel.
On the palate
The glass releases apple, lemon zest, orange marmalade, lemon balm and fragrant elderflower, framed by the contour of the slate soil. On the palate, the finest sweetness combines with pronounced minerality and a demanding acidity. Despite all its complexity, it drinks with ease.
Special features
Over 80% of the estate's vineyard area is planted with ungrafted, own-rooted vines, many of them more than 100 years old. Work is done according to uncompromising organic principles; Weiser-Künstler are members of the Klitzekleiner Ring, an association dedicated to preserving old Riesling vines. A wise owl adorns the antique-blue Schlegel bottles.
