About this wine
Character
The Kirchberg Oberrotweil Chardonnay GG 2024 is a dry white wine of cool stature: 12.5% Vol., taut body, lean texture. Lemon zest and white peach carry the aroma, underpinned by a stony note. A wine of quiet means, whose finish remains long and saline.
Terroir and origin
The Oberrotweiler Kirchberg is one of six VDP Grosse Lage vineyards that the Franz Keller winery cultivates in the Kaiserstuhl in Baden, across a total of 35 hectares. The volcanic soils of this region shape the minerality of the wines; in the Kirchberg, Chardonnay matures to exceptional complexity.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Chardonnay from rigorous vineyard selection. The winery, completed in 2013, is built into the hillside in terraces and allows for gentle vinification by gravity, where technology stays discreetly in the background. The guiding principle "as little as possible, as much as necessary" means minimal intervention and respectful handling of the harvest; Uwe Barnickel and Christian Häuber are responsible in the cellar. Since 2016, Friedrich Keller has led the house, founded in 1892, in its fourth generation, gradually converting it to organic viticulture with biodynamic elements.
On the palate
Taut and juicy, with vibrant acidity and compact structure. The fruit stays cool, joined by delicate herbal spice and a saline-mineral finish. Elegance over opulence, with depth and potential for bottle ageing.
Food pairings
Poached pikeperch, lake trout with almond butter, risotto with green asparagus, veal escalope with light jus or a young Comté.
Special features
The winery's roof is planted with native species from the Badberg nature reserve. The estate includes the restaurant Schwarzer Adler, which has held a Michelin star continuously for over 55 years. Annual production is around 400,000 bottles.
