About this wine
Character
A cool, silky Spätburgunder from 0.5 hectares of family-owned vines in the VDP Erste Lage Königsbacher Ölberg. It appears dark and enticing, the spice stays subtle, and sour cherry leads the aroma.
Terroir and origin
The slope descends at a 5 percent gradient facing east to south-east. The soil consists of terra fusca, a mix of limestone with loam and clay, blended in the topsoil with variegated sandstone scree. The vines get sun early in the morning and lie in shade for the rest of the day; cold winds from the Klausenthal in the Palatinate Forest provide additional cooling. The parcel borders directly on the Idig vineyard.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Spätburgunder, half of which was top-grafted with French clones in 2018. Hand-harvested on 22 September 2021, spontaneously fermented with 10 percent whole clusters. Ageing continued until February 2022 in small oak, including 10 percent new barriques; bottled only in May 2023. 13.0% vol., dry.
On the palate
Cool and silky on entry, then a fine acid structure takes the lead and draws out sweet and sour cherry, preserved morello cherries, violet and lilac across a long finish. The tannin stays soft and carries pleasant bitter notes. Juniper, pepper and sage linger for minutes.
Food recommendations
Sauerbraten with potato dumplings, duck breast with orange sauce and chard, or whole braised celeriac with mushroom stock and roasted hazelnuts.
Special features
