About this wine
Character
Steffen Christmann sums up his ideal in three qualities: powerful, elegant, in perfect balance. The Ölberg Spätburgunder follows that line. It carries weight without becoming heavy, showing the silky texture the estate has built through more than two decades of biodynamic work.
Terroir and origin
Königsbach is the wine village at the heart of the estate. The Ölberg is one of the estate's classified sites, here ranked VDP.ERSTE LAGE. The 17 hectares in Gimmeldingen and Königsbach are classified in full; variegated sandstone, limestone and terraced gravel shape every parcel differently. The vineyards have been farmed biodynamically since 2003.
Grape variety and vinification
Spätburgunder is the German name for Pinot Noir. Christmann produces exclusively single-vineyard wines from Riesling and Pinot: 70 percent of the area is planted to Riesling, the rest to Spätburgunder and a little Weissburgunder. In the vineyard, Sophie and Steffen Christmann work with horn manure, horn silica and compost preparations, following a lunar work calendar. The result is deeper roots and wines with more tension. The 2022 was vinified dry, reaching 13.0% ABV.
On the palate
Deep ruby red in the glass, with violet highlights. The nose offers dark cherry, red berries and fine spice, underscored by a saline note. The body is powerful and taut, the acidity well integrated, the finish long and mineral.
Food pairing suggestions
Pairs well with roast duck breast with cherries and herb-crusted rack of lamb. Equally good with porcini risotto and aged Comté.
Special features
Certified respekt-BIODYN and EU organic. Steffen Christmann took over the estate in 1996, the seventh generation of the family, and has served as president of the VDP since 2007; his daughter Sophie joined in 2018. The estate is a member of respekt-BIODYN and La Renaissance des Appellations. The 1500ml magnum is the format for the long table.
