About this wine
Character
A Cabernet Franc built on finesse rather than fullness: cool spice, silky texture and a tension that will carry this wine for years to come. The 2022 vintage still shows youthful energy, with enormous ageing potential.
Terroir and origin
The grapes grow on a small 0.8-hectare north-facing plot in the Les Picasses vineyard, planted with 80-year-old vines. The subsoil consists of clay-limestone over tuffeau, the soft limestone characteristic of the Loire; the plateaus of Chinon rest on clay-limestone and sandstone above a porous chalk bed. The continental climate with Atlantic influence allows for slow ripening.
Grape variety and winemaking
Single-varietal Cabernet Franc, hand-harvested, with yields of around 35 hl/ha. Fermentation takes place spontaneously in concrete, and the wine remains unfined and unfiltered. Jean de Bonnaventure, agricultural engineer and oenologist, has run the estate since 2017, working with minimal intervention in the cellar.
On the palate
Fresh and vibrant, with blackcurrant and juicy cherry at its core, underpinned by black pepper, bell pepper and dark liquorice. The finely etched tannins give the fruit direction, while 13.0% vol. and a dry finish keep the wine lean.
Food pairings
Pairs with rosé-roasted saddle of lamb, braised veal cheeks or duck breast with blackcurrant reduction. Equally good with pan-fried wild mushrooms and aged Brie de Meaux.
Special features
Wine has been made on the estate since the 14th century, and the 15th-century Gothic château now serves as cellar and family residence. In 1997, Château de Coulaine became the first estate in the entire appellation to achieve organic certification; according to family tradition, the vineyards have never been treated with chemicals for centuries.
