About this wine
Character
A Chinon built on finesse: silky texture, cool spice, clearly defined fruit. The structure carries the wine without ever pressing down, and freshness shapes its course from the first sip through to the finish.
Terroir and origin
The vines grow on the plateaus of Chinon, on clay-limestone and sandstone soils over a porous chalk bed. The continental climate with Atlantic influence extends the ripening period. According to family tradition, these vineyards have never been treated with chemicals across the centuries.
Grape variety and vinification
Single-varietal Cabernet Franc, hand-harvested from low yields of around 35 hl/ha. Jean de Bonnaventure, agricultural engineer and oenologist, has run Château de Coulaine since 2017 as the ninth generation, working with minimal intervention in the cellar. The result is a dry red wine at 13.0% vol.
On the palate
Dark cherry and cassis lead, followed by black pepper, liquorice and a fine touch of bell pepper. The fine-grained tannin supports the ripe fruit rather than masking it. The finish remains long and mineral.
Food pairing recommendations
The wine's fresh backbone and finely knit structure pair well with roasted pheasant, braised leg of lamb with herbes de Provence and pink-roasted duck breast. Also excellent with braised beef cheek and aged goat's cheese from the Loire Valley.
Notable features
The 15th-century Gothic château today serves as both wine cellar and family home; the family has been rooted here since 1300. Etienne de Bonnaventure took over in 1988 with just 1.2 hectares and expanded the vineyard to 19 hectares.
