About this wine
Character
A red wine of cool stature: cherry red in the glass, energetic, pure and precise. It's not power that carries it, but drinkability. The fruit is up front, the oak stays in the background.
Terroir and origin
La Hoya is a three-hectare, east-facing vineyard in the municipality of Elvillar, in the higher, cooler part of Rioja Alavesa at the foot of the Sierra Cantabria. The soils are high in limestone, with sandstone and some clay. Artadi acquired the plot in 2017; since then, the tannins have become finer with every vintage.
Grape variety and winemaking
Tempranillo from 60-year-old vines. The grapes are destemmed and fermented spontaneously. For ageing, the winery increasingly favours used and larger oak barrels, which gives the wine clarity and unadorned elegance. 14.5% ABV, dry.
On the palate
On the nose, fresh red, blue and black fruit, underpinned by cool minerality and herbal aromas; the bouquet is balanced, invigorating and distinctive. Vivid acidity then meets expressive primary fruit. The wine flows silkily, the tannin is fine, and the mineral grip holds it all together.
Distinctive features
The wine is organic certified (ES-ECO-026-VAS). Artadi left the DOCa Rioja by conviction in 2015, whose regulations recognised Crianza and Reserva but not the name of the vineyard plot. Today, Juan Carlos López de Lacalle and his children Carlos and Patricia farm nine single vineyards, with vinification still carried out in Laguardia.
