About this wine
Character
A dry red wine from a single parcel, full-bodied and densely built, yet juicy and carried by a cool, dark minerality. 14.5% vol., without the wine ever feeling opulent.
Terroir and origin
The La Poza de Ballesteros vineyard covers 1.2 hectares in the municipality of Elvillar, west-facing at around 600 metres above sea level. This is the higher, cooler part of Rioja Alavesa at the foot of the Sierra Cantabria. The soil is clay-sandy and calcareous, interspersed with iron-rich clays. Because the parcel catches the warm afternoon sun, the grapes ripen more fully.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Tempranillo from 65-year-old vines, farmed organically without herbicides or synthetic chemicals, with some of the soil worked by horse. The grapes are destemmed and spontaneously fermented, with pressing taking place in Laguardia. For ageing, the estate increasingly relies on used and larger oak barrels, which lend the wine clarity and an unadorned elegance.
On the palate
In the glass, the wine is immediately present and needs barely any air: dark fruit ranging from black cherry to blackberry, never overblown, along with light spice and an earthy minerality. Then come fine-grained tannins, a velvety texture and a lively acidity that keeps the dark fruit in motion.
Distinctive features
In late 2015, Juan Carlos López de Lacalle took Bodegas Artadi out of the DOCa Rioja, as the regulations did not even allow the vineyard to be mentioned on the back label. Today, he and his children Carlos and Patricia farm nine single vineyards across 56 hectares in Rioja Alavesa. La Poza de Ballesteros is one of them.
