About this wine
Character
A dry white wine from Rioja Alavesa that needs no dominant oak: ripe apple, citrus fruit and a clear mineral line carry it. Here too, Artadi seeks finesse rather than power.
Terroir and origin
Artadi farms 56 hectares around Laguardia in Rioja Alavesa, sheltered by the Sierra Cantabria, on limestone-rich, clayey soils. Nine individual vineyards belong to the estate, each with its own character. Work is organic, without herbicides or synthetic chemicals, with part of the soils still worked by horse.
Grape variety and vinification
Single-varietal Viura, the traditional white grape of Rioja, also known as Macabeu. The ageing lets the variety's aromatics of white blossom, pear and herbs speak, without pronounced use of oak. 13.5% Vol., vinified at the cellar in Laguardia.
On the palate
Pale golden yellow with greenish highlights in the glass. A vibrant acidity runs through yellow apple and citrus fruit, underpinned by a mineral core. Medium body, clear structure, lingering finish.
Food pairings
With grilled fish and seafood, such as gambas al ajillo or pulpo a la gallega. Also with oysters and raw fish, tapas with Manchego, fresh goat's cheese, white poultry and vegetable dishes with olive oil.
Notable facts
At the end of 2015, Artadi left the DOCa Rioja because its regulations forbade naming individual vineyards on the back label. Since then, the labels state the parcel rather than an ageing category. The estate is run by Juan Carlos López de Lacalle and his children Carlos and Patricia; cultivation is organically certified under ES-ECO-026-VAS.
