About this wine
Character
The Valdegines 2022 is the wine of a single plot in Laguardia and shows Rioja Alavesa at its leanest and most precise. The nose is subtle and multifaceted: violet and fresh cherries, with peppery notes and a cool mineral streak in the background. A clear, stimulating bouquet.
Terroir and origin
Valdegines is one of nine single vineyards that the López de Lacalle family vinifies separately: four hectares, facing east, at around 600 metres above sea level in the municipality of Laguardia. The vines are rooted in clay-limestone soil, sheltered by the Sierra Cantabria. That the wine carries its plot's name rather than an ageing classification is a matter of principle at Artadi.
Grape variety and vinification
36-year-old Tempranillo vines, supplemented with two to three percent white Viura (Macabeo); Carlos López de Lacalle attributes this addition to added freshness. The grapes are destemmed and spontaneously fermented. Ageing increasingly takes place in used and larger oak barrels, lending the wine clarity and unadorned elegance. 14.5% vol., dry.
On the palate
Crisp red fruit, carried by great freshness. The tannins are fine and polished, the body lean, the texture silky. The line through the palate stays direct and juicy, with alcohol and oak fully integrated. The finish is elegant and finely spiced, the drinkability outstanding.
Special features
At the end of 2015, Artadi left the DOCa Rioja: the regulations prohibited even mentioning individual vineyards on the back label, and its categories speak of the barrel, not the soil. Winemaking continues in Laguardia, in the same cellar. The vines are farmed organically, without herbicides or synthetic chemicals, with the soil partly worked by horse.
