About this wine

Character

A single-varietal Tempranillo of clear definition: dark berry fruit, fine herbal spice and a structure that favours freshness over power. Artadi works with restrained extraction, so the wine is already approachable when young while having the substance to age.

Terroir and origin

The vines grow in Rioja Alavesa around Laguardia, sheltered by the Sierra Cantabria. Limestone-rich, clay soils shape the wine's freshness and finesse. At the end of 2015 Artadi left DOCa Rioja because its regulations prohibited naming individual vineyards on the back label. Vinification still takes place in the Laguardia cellar.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Tempranillo from organically farmed plots, without herbicides or synthetic chemicals, with the soil partly worked using horses. Fermentation takes place in open vessels, keeping extraction gentle; ageing occurs in French barriques rather than American oak: wood for structure, not dominance.

On the palate

Juicy fruit of blackberry and black cherry, alongside violet and herbs. The tannins are silky, a fresh acidity and a chalky, mineral undertone keep the 14.5% Vol. in balance. The wine is vinified dry.

Food pairings

With rack of lamb with rosemary, braised beef and roasted Iberico pork. Also with a mushroom pan with thyme or aged Manchego.

Special features

The estate is organic-certified, ES-ECO-026-VAS. Juan Carlos López de Lacalle forgoes reverse osmosis and micro-oxygenation, as well as the Crianza and Reserva categories: the label states the origin, not the cask time.
