About this wine

Character

The La Solana dels Marges 2018 is a single-varietal Carignan from a single old-vine plot in Priorat, combining high extract with a lean, cool-climate line. In the glass, dark ruby red with a black core and violet reflections; on the palate, austere and linear at 13.5% vol.

Terroir and origin

La Solana is the estate's oldest vineyard, planted entirely with Carignan in 1911, at around 370 metres above sea level. The soil is the local llicorella slate, with a planting density of 5,500 vines per hectare. The north-northeast exposure keeps a constant cool breeze flowing through the rows, giving the wine its lean, upright expression despite the extract of the old vines.

Grape variety and vinification

100% Carignan, hand-harvested by mid-September. The whole, unstemmed clusters ferment for about 40 days in wooden vats, after which the wine ages for 18 months in French casks of 500 to 700 litres. Winemaker Juan Asens works with spontaneous fermentation from wild yeasts, short macerations, minimal sulphur use and no new barriques.

On the palate

On the nose, sour cherry, wild raspberry and wild strawberry, alongside hibiscus and violet, mild spice notes of sumac and clove, and a cool top note of vetiver and white pepper. On the palate, herb-spiced and juicy, with fine-grained, austere tannin and bright, carrying acidity. The finish carries eucalyptus and menthol over the red fruit.

Food pairing suggestions

With braised aubergines with mint, parsley, raisins and pine nuts, with red-wine-braised salt cod with mushrooms, or with a Moroccan lamb tagine with aubergines, mint and quince.

Distinctive features

Alfredo Arribas worked as an architect designing bars and hotels in Barcelona before buying land in southern Priorat in 2001 and bringing abandoned terraces of ungrafted old vines back into production. He farms organically and biodynamically, limiting yields to around one kilogram of grapes per vine.
