About this wine

Character

The Terroirs Épanouis #1 is an Extra Brut from Écueil, whose base wine comes from the 2015 vintage and which rested on the lees for more than six years. This extended ageing gives it a quiet, deep character. Intense straw yellow with faintly copper reflections, a relaxed mousse, with quince, red and yellow apples and plum on the nose, followed by Fino sherry and crushed stone.

Terroir and origin

The vines grow in Écueil in the Petite Montagne de Reims, on soils of sand and loose clay, between limestone slopes and a small forest that shelters the microclimate. Géraldine and Richard Lacourte-Godbillon have farmed the 8.5 hectares of Premier Cru in Écueil and Les Mesneux since 2008, in the ninth generation.

Grape variety and vinification

85 percent Pinot Noir and 15 percent Chardonnay, of which 56 percent from 2015 and 44 percent reserve wines. Hand-harvested, spontaneously fermented, nine months' ageing in stainless steel and around 11 percent in oak. Nothing was stabilised, filtered or fined. Bottled in July 2016, disgorged on 16 November 2022, dosed with 1.5 grams.

On the palate

The entry stays ripe and composed, the mousse fine. Then acidity and minerality stretch the wine and run through its winy core, a fine tannin sets edges and carries the finish.

Food pairing suggestions

Seafood platter with chipotle mayonnaise, char-grilled octopus on chickpea mousse and beetroot, or a Comté soufflé with green salad.

Details

The estate is farmed biodynamically: no pesticides, no herbicides, preparations made from nettle, horsetail and valerian. The oak for the cellar's barrels grows just a few hundred metres from the vines, in the forest of Écueil.
