About this wine
Character
The Laietà Gran Reserva Brut Nature 2021 is an expressive yet finely balanced Cava, its tension arising from the contrast between a creamy mousse and austere minerality. In the glass, a bright golden yellow with light reflections, topped by a very fine, steadily rising bead.
Terroir and origin
Alta Alella lies in the Serralada de Marina Natural Park, two kilometres from the Mediterranean and fifteen from the Ramblas in Barcelona. The vines grow at 100 to 220 metres above sea level, facing southeast towards the sea. The soil is called Sauló: sandy granite, acidic, almost free of limestone, with good drainage. Yields stay below 6000 kilograms per hectare, with individual plots yielding even less.
Grape variety and vinification
The base is the indigenous Xarel·lo, known in Alella as Pansa Blanca, together with Chardonnay. The varieties are vinified separately, 100 percent in stainless steel tank in the 2021 vintage, at a controlled 15 °C. The wine then ages for 44 months on the lees. As a Brut Nature, it receives no dosage, 0 g/l.
On the palate
The nose is intense and warm, with generous yellow fruit of mandarin, persimmon, mirabelle plum and ripe apricot, followed by poached pear and pear compote as well as clove, cardamom, cinnamon and coriander. With air come apricot tart, tarte Tatin and shortcrust pastry, underpinned by a salty, maritime freshness. The mousse stays silky without becoming broad, standing in contrast to a pronounced salty, stony minerality. The texture is dry and linear, the tannin finely integrated. On the finish, the spices and poached fruit return, carried by lingering salinity.
Special features
Josep Maria and Cristina Pujol-Busquets bought the overgrown Can Genís estate in 1991 and rescued 60-year-old vines; today their daughters Mireia and Georgina run the estate. In 2006, Spain's first sulphite-free Cava was created here.
