About this wine

Character

A cool, lean-built Nebbiolo that draws its effect from tension rather than opulence: clear fruit, a spicy core, mineral freshness. Despite its 14.0% ABV, it never feels heavy.

Terroir and origin

Vietti has worked since 1873 in Castiglione Falletto, a medieval village on a 350-metre hill in Piedmont. Carlo Vietti founded the estate, and his son Mario began exporting to America and Switzerland. Today the house covers 75 hectares, with production at 600,000 bottles.

Grape variety and vinification

Single-varietal Nebbiolo. In 1961, Alfredo Currado vinified grapes from individual vineyards separately, creating one of the first Barolo crus; this focus on origin still defines the estate today. Since 2016, Vietti has belonged to the Krause family.

On the palate

On the nose, morello cherry, plum, elderberry and mulberry, joined by violet, hibiscus, bergamot, black pepper, juniper, rosemary and thyme, with leather and dark chocolate in the background. Served slightly chilled, the wine stays juicy and precise: dark cherry, ripe plum, slightly tart berry fruit, never jammy. The tannin is fine-grained and slightly bitter, carrying the whole structure. The finish brings together fruit, herbal spice and liquorice.

Food pairing

With Tajarin al Tartufo, Agnolotti del Plin, Brasato al Barolo or raw Fassona beef, as well as with mushroom risotto and rack of lamb.

Highlights

Since 1974, the bottles have featured original artwork by various artists, including a drawing by Pier Paolo Pasolini. In 1967, Alfredo Currado produced the first single-varietal Arneis and has since been regarded as the father of Arneis. In 2025, Doctor Wine named Vietti Azienda dell'Anno.
