About this wine
Character
A Champagne that starts dry and stays dry: clear, precise and pure, with the chalky vein that defines a young Blanc de Blancs from the Côte des Blancs. The four grams of dosage conceal nothing.
Terroir and origin
The Chardonnay vines stand in the somewhat flatter, warmer sites in the south of Vertus, a Premier Cru on the Côte des Blancs. The soil is pure chalk. Larmandier-Bernier farms 16 hectares there across 17 parcels, spread from Vertus through Cramant, Chouilly and Oger to Avize.
Grape variety and vinification
100 percent Chardonnay. The Latitude, formerly called Tradition, is a cuvée of wines from up to six vintages. Fermentation happens spontaneously with the natural yeasts, ageing takes place in large wooden casks from the Stockinger cooperage. After more than 24 months sur lattes, the wine is disgorged, dosed at four grams, and bottled unfined and unfiltered.
On the palate
Lemon yellow in the glass, the mousse lively and fine-beaded. The nose stays bright and clear: citrus, white strawberries, wet chalk, along with herbs and the faintly bitter note of tonic water. On the palate, alongside all its clarity, the wine shows a noticeable warmth from the southern sites, lending it fullness and depth.
Food pairings
As an aperitif with parmesan puff pastries. Also with cedro citrus carpaccio and scallop tartare and, for something more substantial, with duck rillettes and brioche.
Special features
Pierre Larmandier took over the estate in 1982 at the age of 18, banned herbicides in 1992, and converted fully to biodynamic farming in 1999, making it one of the first estates in Champagne to do so. Since 2017, his son Arthur has been working alongside him. The bottles arrive without a capsule.
