About this wine
Character
The Longitude is the Blanc de Blancs with which Larmandier-Bernier opens the house's quality pyramid: single-varietal Chardonnay from Premier Cru sites on the Côte des Blancs, vinified in a purist style. Lemon and grapefruit carry the wine, beneath which lies the chalky note the estate prizes above all.
Terroir and origin
The grapes come from Premier Cru sites in Vertus, Oger, Avize and Cramant, where the chalk sits close to the surface beneath only a thin layer of organic topsoil. The name refers to the 4th meridian; the wine previously carried the simple label Blanc de Blancs.
Grape variety and vinification
Single-varietal Chardonnay, blended with 40% reserve wine from the oak foudre of the house's perpetual reserve. The dosage is usually around 4 grams. Pierre Larmandier relies on spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, forgoes filtration and fining, and ages the wine in large foudres from the Austrian coopers Stockinger, which lend structure without dominating the wine.
On the palate
On the nose, delicate pastry notes with a touch of marzipan, followed by lemon, grapefruit, crisp pear and apple, with white stone and oyster shell in the background. The wine comes across as crystalline and transparent, fresh and lively, with driving acidity and a silky texture. The bright, citrus fruit remains dominant, with depth and length behind it.
Distinctive features
Larmandier-Bernier is among the first biodynamic estates in Champagne: herbicides disappeared from the vineyards in 1992, followed by full conversion in 1999. The 16 hectares are spread across 17 parcels along the Côte des Blancs, and since 2017 son Arthur has worked at the estate. The bottles even forgo capsules.
