About this wine
Character
The Latitude Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut is a single-varietal Chardonnay Champagne from the Côte des Blancs, here in the six-litre Methuselah. Sophie and Pierre Larmandier converted their house to biodynamic farming early on, long before it became fashionable in Champagne. The wine shows this without detour: precise, saline, sparingly dosed.
Terroir and origin
The grapes grow in Vertus, in the south of the Côte des Blancs. The family farms Premier and Grand Cru plots there from Vertus to Avize, as well as Cramant, Chouilly and Oger. The soil is pure chalk, with some vines up to 90 years old.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Chardonnay, spontaneously fermented with its own yeasts and aged in tonneaux and foudres from the Austrian cooperage Stockinger. Light lees stirring adds mouthfeel without masking the minerality. Neither filtered nor fined. As an Extra Brut, the Champagne receives no more than four grams of sugar per litre, at 12.5% vol.
On the palate
On the nose, lemon zest, white blossom and brioche. The palate entry is taut and dry, with grapefruit and green apple and a saline streak reminiscent of wet chalk stone. The finish stays long and chalky.
Food pairing recommendations
With oysters, scallops and turbot sashimi, as well as with paper-thin sliced Serrano ham.
Special features
The six-litre format allows the wine to mature especially slowly. The bottles arrive without a neck capsule. The name Latitude refers, like a coordinate, to its origin.
