About this wine
Character
An off-dry Chenin Blanc that doesn't flaunt its sweetness but instead sets it against acidity and salinity. Sparkling golden yellow in the glass, youthful in expression, noticeably at the beginning of a long journey.
Terroir and origin
Le Haut-Lieu is the birthplace of Domaine Huet: the family bought the property with its five hectares of vines in 1928, and today the vineyard spans fifteen hectares above the Vouvray plateau. The site's deep brown clay lends the wines fruitiness and freshness, while the deep, chalky loam makes them approachable.
Grape variety and vinification
Chenin Blanc, called the grape of moonlight in Vouvray. Gaston Huet introduced biodynamics in the late 1980s, and the entire estate has been Demeter-certified since 1993. The deep rock-cut cellars serve as ageing space: constant temperature, neutral vessels, time. Cellar master Benjamin Joliveau, a Vouvray native, has been responsible for the wines since 2020.
On the palate
The nose opens with bright fruit — honeydew melon, ripe pineapple, quince compote and fresh grapefruit — followed by acacia, elderflower and lilac, alongside blossom honey, candied citrus peel and hints of fresh ginger and coriander. On the palate, a lively, playful acidity carries the elegant sweetness, a tangy grapefruit note pushes back, and the minerality reads as saline. Anyone opening the 2018 now should decant it and pour it not too cold into a larger glass.
Food pairing suggestions
Oysters with grapefruit segments, pan-seared spiny lobster with lemon-ginger butter and parsnip, gorgonzola and fig gratin.
Notable features
At Huet, it's the weather, not the winemaker, that decides whether a site is bottled as Sec, Demi-Sec or Moelleux. This demi-sec bottling from Le Haut-Lieu will continue to develop beautifully over the coming years.
